Adult Education

CBT's Adult Education Program offers a variety of daytime and evening programming.  In addition to the confirmed programs listed below, plans are underway for a monthly Current Events Discussion Group, a Seder Workshop, a trip to the Rare Book Library at the Conservative Seminary in New York City, and a presentation by the Philadelphia Jewish Archive Society on Jewish New Jersey.

Please note:  There is no charge for any of these programs.  Members and non-members are welcome.

Lunch and Learn Torah Study with Rabbi Gans.

This new class meets on the second Wednesday of every month at CBT from 11:30 to 12:45.  Each class focuses on the weekly Torah portion.  Attendees are welcome to bring a dairy lunch.  The discussions are led by Rabbi Gans.

Brotherhood SynagogueHistory of Jewish South Jersey and Philadelphia, presented by the Philadelphia Jewish Archive Center, Sunday, March 22 at 7:30 p.m.

Did you know that the first Jewish agricultural colony in the United States was founded in Woodbine in 1891 by Baron de Hirsch?  Not the Woodbine of the former Woodbine Inn, but Woodbine in Cape May County.  Woodbine was originally settled by immigrants from Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe and in 1903 it became the first Jewish borough to be incorporated in America.

Join us at CBT on Sunday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. when Julie Levitt, whose family grew up in Woodbine, will present a pictorial history of the Woodbine settlement.  Carole Le Fauvre Rochester, Executive Director of PJAC will also discuss the history of the Jewish community in the Philadelphia area.

Passover Seder Workshop, March 30, 7:30 p.m. at CBT

Whether you’re a Seder Maven or a novice approaching your first solo seder, come to our Passover Seder Workshop.  Hear about some traditional and non-traditional approaches from Rabbi Gans and other CBT members:

  • • How can you make your Seder relevant to today’s issues?
  • • How can you involve non-Jewish guests?
  • • How can you capture the interest of younger participants?
  • • How can you introduce a feminist component?

Bring your questions as well as your family’s Seder traditions and innovations to share.

The New and Improved TIKKUN Is Coming….. Saturday May 30

One of CBTs traditions is to observe Shavuot by holding a Tikkun, which among other things is an opportunity for our members to share their knowledge or unique experiences with other members.  The Tikkun is typically held in a member’s home and includes a meal and Havdalah.  Although we are still firming up our speakers, tentative topics include:

  • The Torah Code – a discussion of the so-called “coded” messages in the Torah than contain information about people and predictions of future events.
  • Short story discussion
  • Depiction of Jews in TV and Film?
  • Review of member Diane Ashton’s book, Four Centuries of Jewish Women’s Spirituality

CBT’s Book Discussion Group

As part of its community outreach program, CBT's Book Group is meeting monthly at Barnes and Noble on Route 70 in Marlton at 7:30 p.m.  Titles for the Jewish Characters and Authors Book Group are selected by the Adult Education Committee and discussions are led by members of the Committee.  Books for the remainder of the year are:

April 1, People of the Book, by Geraldine Brook, discussion leader Rabbi Gans

May 6, Centaur in the Garden, by Moacyr Scliar, discussion led by Diane Ashton

June 10, Two Lives by Vikram Seth (tentative)

Sunday Morning Breakfast With the Rabbi

On five separate Sunday mornings, Rabbi Gans selects a contemporary article of political, religious, or social significance for us to read and discuss. No advance preparation is required.  Copies of the short articles are available for attendees to read while we drink our morning coffee and munch on bagels, fruit, and other breakfast goodies.  Dates for the remainder of the year are March 1, 2009, May 3, 2009 and June 3, 2009.  Start time is 9:30 a.m.

Current Events Discussion Group

Meets on the first Monday of every month at 8:00 PM at CBT.  We hope all our old Conservatives, Liberals, Conspiracy Theorists, and Skeptics will show up along with a host of new people with new perspectives.   So come join us and add your 2¢ to the discussion.
